Dubrovnik, the pearl of the Adriatic, unique cultural and political history, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979.
Dubrovnik (Latin: Ragusa) is a town located on the Adriatic Sea, in southern Croatia. It is considered one of the most important cultural and tourist centers throughout Southeast Europe. It is famous for its old town with numerous cultural and religious monuments.
The city of Dubrovnik was founded in the naval trade and trade with the Ottoman Empire and all other countries of the world from America to India during the early Middle Ages, and for a long time was the only opponent of the Venetian Republic of Venice in the eastern part of the Adriatic. Due to wealth and skillful diplomatic relations, the city of Dubrovnik developed considerably in the 15th century. the XVI century. Dubrovnik was the center of development of Croatian language and South Slavic literature, and the birthplace of many important poets, writers, philologists, painters, mathematicians and physicists.
It is assumed that Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century, but according to some new finds and findings even considerably earlier. These new discoveries are based on finding remains of the ruins of the cathedral, which was at the site of today's cathedral. The old founders of Dubrovnik, fleeing the Avaris from the destroyed Epidaurus (today's Cavtat), came to the island of Laus at the foot of Mount Srđ and decided to settle there. In time, the island was connected with the mainland of the present-day Dubrovnik.
