Description
The beginnings of Christianity in Mursi (old name of Osijek) date back to the 1st Century. According to tradition, the Christianity preached a disciple of St. Peter and his third successor to the papal chair Pope Clement I (91-100). Here, he established the diocese. Few cities can boast such an ancient and honorable tradition.
Then, through 20 centuries, many events changed the face of the city, Christianity or raised the vexed. From the documents of the 14th century shows that in (the Citadel) there is a church and parish. In 1525, the town was captured by the Turks. Christians are dispersed or anonymous. After the collapse of the Turkish forces in 1687, we thoroughly monitor the growth and development of the organized church life in the city.
Gornjogradska parish was built west of the Fortress. It is 1732, in the cemetery, built the first parish church, and in 1735 the water and registers. In the 19th century the church became small and inconspicuous, in the midst of new buildings.
Bishop Strossmayer in 1866 provided the first impetus for the construction of a new church.
Record the neo-Gothic church. It is built with brick facade (three million units) and stone. Floor plan has the shape of a cross, and the interior is divided into three naves. The side aisles were broken transverse and medium ends apse, like the early Christian basilicas. Three Gothic portal from the east water into the church, and the fourth is on the north wall. Each decorated with relief. The ceiling stone pillars seemingly complex of several smaller jambs. Tower, 90 m high, divided into four galleries, has four large bells. Fifth, at least, is the little tower above the crossing of the church. In the northern and southern transept gable are three stone sculptures. The main altar in the sanctuary (a gift from Bishop Strossmayer) is dedicated to the patron of the church and parish of St. Apostles. Peter and Paul, among which is the statue of the Sacred Heart. Next altars of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Teresa of Avila. All three are carved in stone by Ivan Novotny. The next two altars: St. Joseph and St. Anthony of Padua work of the sculptor Fellner from Leibnitz.
In the Gothic architecture of the weight has been limited to columns. The walls, which in this case is not the role of the main carrier, may be more open. Hence the Gothic churches, many windows, usually painted Bojan glass, stained-glass windows. Sunlight that passes through them gives color intensity and brilliance, and the church makes room separated from the outside world, which in man stimulates new, believer appropriate mood.
The church has 33 stained glass windows with visual content and 7 with colored ornaments. All the work of the Viennese company Gold. The sanctuary 7 stained glass picture of the life of the Apostles Peter and Paul, and 5 glorious mysteries of the rosary. The boats: 5 Joyful and Sorrowful mysteries of the rosary. Then 7 shows the stained glass saints 'images, and 4 scenes of Jesus' life.
