Description
The Cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Great Lady, while St. Stjepan, the king of Hungary, her second patron.
The entire surrounding area encloses the towers and the ramparts, and by the beginning of the 20th century there was a tower and a wall in front of the facade, so it was one of the rare specimens of the fully encircled Prestige. From the south and east side of the wall lies the Archbishop's Palace, while many religious treasures are kept in Riznica, where you can see works from the end of the 11th century until the 20th century.
The cathedral has eight bells - five hanging in the north, and three in the southern bell towers, the largest bell of the Holy Trinity in 1843, hardly 6.5 tons. The entire shrine outside is 77 meters long, 46 meters wide and can accommodate about five thousand believers.
The Zagreb Diocese was founded in 1094, and the cathedral itself was built at the footsteps. The first known church in this place was completed in 1217, in order to build a new chapel of St. Stjepan The first martyr, still built in the Archdiocese.
Here we have a view of the cathedral, from Park Ribnjak, September 2018.
