Dubrovnik (Latin Ragusium) is a city in the south of Croatia and is one of the most famous Croatian tourist destinations.
In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The prosperity of Dubrovnik has always been based on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages, the Republic of Dubrovnik as the only city-state on the east coast of the Adriatic rival to the Venetian Republic. With its wealth and skilful diplomacy, the city achieved an extraordinary degree of development, especially during the 15th and 16th centuries. Dubrovnik was one of the centers of the development of the Croatian language and literature, home to many important Croatian poets, playwrights, painters, mathematicians, physicists and other scientists.
