Dubrovnik (Latin Ragusium) is a city in the south of Croatian and one of the most historic Croatian tourist destinations.
In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
The prosperity of Dubrovnik has always been based on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages the Republic of Dubrovnik as the only city-state on the east coast of the Adriatic rival Venetian Republic. With its wealth and skilled diplomacy, the city achieved a remarkable level of development, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries. Dubrovnik was one of the centers of development of the Croatian language and literature, home to many notable Croatian poets, playwrights, painters, mathematicians, physicists and other scholars.

In 1667, Dubrovnik was almost destroyed by a powerful earthquake which killed a large number of Dubrovnik, and many buildings were destroyed.
On 1 October 1991, members of the JNA are bombarded city, and most emphatically was 6 December 1991 From the grenade irrevocably destroyed cross on Srđ. Also, damaged Onofrio fountain, Franciscan and Dominican monastery, St. Blaise and other shrines, Archive, hotels, electrical installations and numerous other buildings. However, they soon came to the help of UNESCO, and the city perfectly restored.
