Description

Dandelion (Taraxacum) genus aster family (Asteraceae, earlier known as Compositae). Usually located in regions with temperate and cold climates. Occurs in meadows, parks, gardens, along paths and hedges. It grows in the high mountains, but there it is much smaller rosettes. The appearance of the plants greatly varies depending on the habitat.

The best known and most common species of Taraxacum officinale, is a herbaceous perennial with toothed leaves on the ground Ruzic of which rises a hollow stalks with one yellow flower heads on top. The root of the spindle in the upper part razrastao. It blooms from April to October. After flowering occurs seed, ranked as an air ball, with a lot of seeds that are spread by the wind.

Used in folk medicine as a bitter agent, kolagog, aperitif and to reduce fat in the blood. Dandelion is also edible, young leaves are used as salad, flowers to prepare honey-like syrup, and wine and beer. Of roasted roots can be prepared a substitute for coffee. The buds can be pickled and serve as a substitute for capers. It is grown as a vegetable in many countries. Type Taraxacum kok-saghyz, originally from Kazakhstan, is among the plants that produce rubber. The genus includes 2,290 species.
