Description
The female dwarf hippo, aged one and a half, arrived in Zagreb from the Halle Zoo in Germany.
Her new home likes it, and since it can often be seen in the water, the thieves say she just opened the bathing season in Maksimir.
She is much smaller and younger than the well-known Otto. He has been twenty-two years old and has been living in Croatia for nineteen years. He was born in Hoyerswerd, so the zoo workers joked that there should be no cultural differences between them.
From their life in the Maksimir forest is expected much. Namely, the Zagreb Zoo participates in breeding program for their kind.
Hippos are currently separated, but over the fence they can watch, listen and tease. Similarly, members of their species behave in nature as well. Males and females do not live in pairs but merge only at mating time.
It is a threatened species of animals whose population is negatively affected by hunting and loss of habitat due to the spread of agricultural land and excavation of mines. They are tropical forests of western Africa and are always close to water: streams, lakes or swamps. On the menu, they are food of plant origin - from roots to leaves and grass to fruits.
Dwarf hippos are much smaller than ordinary. The first weighs between 160 and 275 pounds, and the others can exceed three tons.
