Description
Stone Street is named after the only surviving gate of Gradec, Stone Gate, on the east side of the former city fortifications. All other city gates demolished in the XIX. century. The door is a square building shaped like a house, with road passageway on the ground floor. It served as the main entrance to the city, and during the plague in 1647 was only open [city gate]. After first mentioned 1357.g., as "a great stone gate", while their previous appearance and form is not known, but we know they built 1266.g., like the rest of fortifications.
Four times the victim was in the fires of which the most famous one from 1731.g., because with him bound and uniqueness Stone Gate - they are not only entry [in the city], but the sanctuary. The fire which damaged much of the Cathedral Chapter and almost destroyed Graz, completely burned down and flat on the floor above passage. In the apartment burned to the saved image of the Virgin, which, miraculously, not burned, it could not be said of the frame, thanks to which the combustion image slightly scorched around the edges, but it is the exception that was undamaged. The image is then transferred to its current location, in the chapel of Our Lady of the Stone Gate.
"Viable" Chapel in Stone Gate soon became a famous gathering of citizens that the Mother of God pointing prayers with burning candles (in Zagreb are still current sayings like: "I'll have [for something] light a candle in the Stone Gate."). Many thought that the Mother of God have heard their prayers, and their fulfillment are immortalized hundreds of metal plates engraved with acknowledgments and testimony of faith. On the 260th anniversary of the shrine Zagreb Archbishop Franjo Kuharic proclaimed (31 May 1991) Mother of God of the Stone Gate patron of Zagreb, on the same day marks the Day of the City.
Iron bars pictures made in 1758 John George Chorth and 1931 Mother of God and receives a crown of precious stones. In the 19th century several times the planned demolition of the gates (1842, 1875 and 1878), as well as in 1907, when it prevented the company "Brothers of the Croatian Dragon". The company arranged the room on the first floor of the tower, and there founded the City Library, the City Archives and the Museum of the City of Zagreb.
Stone Gate also appear in the novel August Shenoa "Goldsmith's Gold", which is set for the most part takes place in Stone Street 5. The setting of the novel was in 1929 marked by placing the statue of the heroine, Dora Krupiceva, in a niche on the western front door. The statue is the work of modern sculptor Ivo Kerdić.
In addition to the door of the chapel and "Goldsmith's Gold ', Stone Street in just a few meters capable of even more history, such as the oldest pharmacy in Gradec (Zagreb - the second oldest in the area of today's Croatian) which continuously works since 1355. One of the pharmacists who worked there was a great-grandson of Dante Alighieri, and is, accordingly, 1989. A memorial plaque with the text: "Niccolo Alighieri, the grandson of the poet's first-born Pietro, issued a direct voice on famous ancestor in Zagreb where he lived and married a chemist 1399. "in contrast pharmacy are chains with HMS" Victory "Nelson flagship in the famous battle of Trafalgar. Here ends short Stone Street, whose Stone Gate self-effacing, but full of surprises, the first experience of old Zagreb.
