Description
Statue of St. George's work of Austrian sculptor A. Kompatscher and A. Winder, who came to Zagreb in the early 20th century as a gift from the Mažuranić family. The statue was erected in 1944 next to the Stone Gate. Until then, the same statue was not the people of Zagreb, although over a hundred years was in the heart of the city, in the courtyard Mažuraničevih. It was owned by Croatian family Mažuranić which during the 19th and 20th centuries Croatia donated substantial minds, writers and politicians. Around the statue of Saint George interwoven stories about his curse because they occurred unexplained death of its owners.
Unlike other monuments St. Juraj typically displayed an act of fighting the dragon, this monument is different in that it shows St. George after the fight. The monument until 1937 was located in the Styrian town Mallnitz. Monument St. George, their patron, in 1994 set up the company, "the Croatian Dragon". City locations around the monument is now called "Market Brothers of the Croatian Dragon".
My original photo, caught in Zagreb, December 2016 .
