Description
The statue of Petrica Kerempuh of sculptor Vanja Radaus is located in Opatovina, above Dolac market, the market Petrica Kerempuh. Petric Kerempuh was a popular entertainer and joker, who is from the folk works in the literature (most famous appearance was in his Ballads of Petrica Kerempuh (1936), the work of writer Miroslav Krleza) and served as inspiration for many other arts, including Vanja Radaus for this beautiful statue. The statue is about 2,7m tall (with stand) wide and about 1.3 m. Human figures that have shown something a little larger than life-size. The statue is made of bronze, and was built in 1973.
In the literal sense "kerempuh" means "intestine, stomach," and in a figurative sense means cunning man, merry, Dodger.
A lot of European nations have developed a fictional character in their folklore depicting a sarcastic, unconventional individual through which they would laugh at their everyday misfortunes and expose the vices of evil people (usually, the rulers or other persons of influence). As a character which depicts Croatian vulnerability, but also its determination and will to resist, Petrica Kerempuh is another cultural feature of the country. A person who always finds a way to laugh, despite the tears of sadness covering his face, he is somebody we can all draw strength from, not just Croats.
My original photo, captured in Zagreb, December 2016 .
