Description
Peach (lat. Prunus persica) is a plant of the family Rosaceae. Originally from China, and is grown around the world because of juicy fruits. It is a deciduous tree, grows from 5-10 meters and belongs to the subfamily Prunoideae. Along with almonds, was included in the suborder Amygdalus within Prunus order. The leaves are pointed, 7-15 cm long and 2-3 cm wide. It blooms early, before leafing. Flowers are solitary or in pairs, 2.5 to 3 cm in diameter, pink with 5 petals. The fruit is nuts, with a large seed enclosed in a hard stone. The fruit of peach has yellow or whitish flesh, very tasty, with a smooth and soft skin, depending on the variety. Together with cherries, plums and apricots, peach belongs to the nuts.
Peach carries the scientific name persica, derived from the ancient belief that Europeans are peaches native to Persia (now Iran). Today botanists have reached a consensus that the true origin of the peach China, and that is through Persia and the Mediterranean, arrived in Europe, the so-called Silk Road long before the new era. Cultivated peaches are divided into two categories: those in which the pits are glued to the body of the fetus, and those in which the pits easily separated from the body. Both categories have white or yellow flesh of the fruit. Peaches with white flesh typically are very sweet and less acidic, while the yellow usually more acidic, though it depends on the variety.
