Description
Metkovic was mentioned for the first time in 1422 in a document kept in the Dubrovnik archive: flumaria Narrenti subtus Metchovich (... on the river Neretva under Metković). Judging by archaeological finds on the hill Predolac, right next to the city, life began in it already in prehistoric times. It is assumed that the first well-known people in the lower course of the Neretva were Hellenized Illyrians Daorsi, later suppressed by the armed Ardijana and Delmati. They are witnessed by numerous castles and stone piles on the surrounding hills. In the fourth century, Cr. The ancient Greeks began to colonize the Adriatic islands and the coast, and for this reason they built an emporia, a three kilometer northwest of Metković. It was in the antique far-known Narona, today's Vid.
To shorten the darkness of the city of Metković, in the valley of the Neretva River, this is an old town on the hill Predolac above Metković. Many stairs lead up to the Church of St. Elijah, and continue to Mount Predolac to the top, where the cemetery is located.
