Description
The genus name Syringa is derived from the words of Syrinx, the names of the Greek nymph who is running away from the love of god Pan came to the banks of the river nymphs and asked to help her. They turned it into a river reed which has a hollow interior. Pan cut off a stick and made her his first flute which is known as the syrinx.
Lilac is a popular ornamental shrub in parks and gardens. It blooms from April to May. Height varies from 2-10 meters. In the spring gives fragrant flowers conical or pyramidal shape, each about 1 cm in diameter, purple, white or pale pink in color, and is grown as an ornamental.
Natural range of the genus are parts of southeast Europe and Asia Minor. Lilac growing in regions where there are no strong frosts. Generally growing on alkaline soils.
Purple lilac means first love, while white symbol of youthful innocence. In Greece, Lebanon and Cyprus, lilac is strongly associated with Easter because it blooms at the time, and is therefore given the name Paschalia (which refers to Easter, especially in the Orthodox Christian tradition). Spokane, Washington is known as the Lilac city, and there are lilac festival is held every year, together with a lilac parade.
