Description
Korcula is a Croatian island in the Adriatic sea near the Dalmatian coast.
The town of Korcula is the house that is believed to be in it was born Marco Polo. There is doubt whether born on Korcula, or perhaps elsewhere. There are many disputes, but apart from some other cities (Venice, Istanbul), is considered to be born in Korcula, Marco Polo in 1254. The street and part of the city (according to existing records that exist today), which today is called. House of Marco Polo, which correspond to the area of the earliest days belong to the Polo family.
The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The oldest is the Old Stone Age, in Vela Spila.
According to legend, the island was inhabited by the Trojan hero Antenor in the 12th century BC, which is also known as the founder of the city of Padua. The second wave of human inhabited by the Illyrians. Korcula was a Greek colony called Korkyra Melaina, then Illyrian and Roman called Corcyra Nigra, then Byzantine and finally Slavic settlement. In the 10th century a part of the Neretva Principality, then recognizes the power of Zahumlje, Venetians and Croatian-Hungarian king.
After democratic elections in 1990 in a referendum to Croatian population opted to exit from Yugoslavia and declared the independent state of the Republic of Croatia. The turbulent history of Korcula remained written in stone and can be seen in every piece of this unique island.
Tourism is its development in the Korcula started at the end of XIX. century. The first public bath is regulated in the town of Korcula in 1904, while the first Korčulan prospect in several languages printed in Vienna in 1914. After II. World War II, the sixties started the whole island development of modern tourism: hotels were built, decorated campsites and other tourist and catering facilities.
It is especially significant "health tourism" because of its mild climate, clean air and sea, and medicinal mud at several island locations. Korcula Island represents a unique combination of beautiful nature, centuries-old cultural traditions and history and modern tourism.
Numerous beautiful beaches and bays, luxurious hotels and holiday homes, centuries-old olive groves and vineyards, ancient villas and ancient island town that seems to have remained lost in a long past times mothers on the island tourists from all over the world.
