The first church in Metkovic was located on the site of today's church on the slopes of the hill Predolac and was dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. It was a small church built from a drywall and covered with a straw, because at that time the houses in Lower Neretva were covered with straw or stone slabs. Parish church of St. Elijah was built at the site of this older church in 1700. It was expanded in 1780 and 1830. However, the church soon became overwhelming and overwhelming for the parish, which grew numerically, and was thinking of building a new and bigger church. In 1858, the Empress Elizabeth had endowed the church with some goods. This is the beginning of looking for funds for the construction of a new church drafted by Juraj Marocochi. The construction of the church's central ground floor began in 1867 and was completed three years later. It was built in Neo-Romanic and neo-Gothic style.
