BOAT MARATHON is an amateur sports competition in the race boat, traditional indigenous craft in the valley of the Neretva. It is held annually on the second Saturday in August, from 22 500 meters long, under the auspices of the Croatian President.
The goal is to preserve the ship marathon and avulsion of oblivion and decay of the old original Neretva ships.
After viewing times, Boat Marathon is one of the biggest events in Croatia, but also the tourist spectacle and attraction. Live it looks at tens of thousands of viewers on the entire route. Certainly the most impressive and most attractive moment of the start in Metković. Then 330 rowers in 33 (same) ships, densely compacted, and rumbling drums rapidly moving towards distant in Ploce. Although the aim is far and tiring route, at the start of all of arm stroke such that the target 100 meters away and in the same rhythm ride the entire route.
Start Marathon boat is at the bridge in Metkovic, then ride downstream river Neretva next Opuzen and Ploce. The crew of the boat consists of 10 rowers, a drummer and parićar (abs). During the event, allowed the replacement (up to) 6 new rowers in Opuzen, so the team has a minimum of 12 and maximum of 18 participants. The marathon involved both male and female crew.
The ship has to be the traditional shape and the dimensions prescribed by the ordinance with precisely determined number and size Lukoč (ribs). The hull of the boat must be made of wood, with a specific thickness of the boards.
Paddles are a traditional form of wood as well as a pair (rudder) which is a form of long oars. Rowers sit arranged on the edge of both sides of the boat, with their foot shall not exceed over the nave (can be stretched along the edge or in the boat). Substitutions are made on the appropriate place on the right bank of the river in the direction of the waterfront in Opuzen. Drummer, located on the bow or the middle of the boat, and can replace any rower, if necessary, during the race. During the race allowed the mutual replacement in the ship, or a maximum of 10 oars must be in the water.
The winning team receives a gold medal, a great transitional winning a bronze shield of Duke Domagoj and smaller shield in permanent ownership and a cash prize. Runner-up and third-placed teams receive silver and bronze shields and less permanent ownership as well as cash prizes. A prize pool for the rest of the team decision is made by the organizer.
