Ilok, the easternmost town of the Republic of Croatian, a blend of east and west, in line rises above the Danube, surrounded by slopes of Fruska Gora and beautiful vineyards. The town was a long history of interesting cultural contrasts embodied in its medieval core, one of the largest and important urban-fortified complexes of the northern Croatian and the Danube. But always and above all Ilok the Danube kingdom of wine with its Traminac, as well as all other varieties of this area, overwhelmed as the market and most of the visitors. Today, Ilok town which revived after the war and exile, is open to change and warm and ready to welcome all its guests.
The oldest archaeological evidence of inhabited areas of Ilok in the early Stone Age, and there are numerous findings from the Copper, Bronze and Iron Ages. Were discovered rich deposits of Vinkovci and Vučedol culture. The Romans, winning these parts, due to the control of the Danube-Pannonian route and boundaries built border fortress called Cuccium. The name Ilok was first mentioned in 1267 as Wjlok, Wylhoc and Iwnlak.
The most famous owner of Ilok was Nikola Iločki (1410th-1477th), a powerful Croatian-Hungarian aristocrat and pretender to the royal crown, Ban Croatian, Slavonia and Mačva, Duke of Transylvania and king of Bosnia. Under his rule, Ilok experienced its "golden age", while the city's core defined by walls which are largely preserved to this day.
Ilok estates in the 17th century Odescalchi noble family that restores old Nikola's castle from the Middle Ages, modernizing viticulture and wine cellar built beneath the castle introducing Ilok to its "second golden age". In the 18th and 19th centuries, Ilok was the seat of the Srijem County prefect, district headquarters and judicial, commercial and fair center.
