Description
Delta Neretva valley in southern Croatian Adriatic coast by the mouth of his form Neretva River. There is an ongoing initiative to protect the whole valley as Nature Park Neretva River Delta. Delta covers an area of 12,000 hectares. Originally consisting of 12 branches, but after numerous and extensive land reclamation and cultivation of this agriculturally rich area, the number of branches was reduced to only four, and previous swampy delta largely been turned into a rich agricultural area, colloquially called the "Croatian California". The Neretva Valley is an important agricultural area where mainly citrus, also important is the cultivation of olive trees, which dates back to the Neretva principality. Bird Hunting is represented in the Valley since ancient times and was one of the main activities of older residents who over time have developed special skills that are still used today (ululation). Because of the beautiful views and interesting things which carries Delta, every year there are more tourists. In the area of the Neretva River Delta five sites, the total area of 1620 hectares, which are protected categories ornithological reserve (Pod Gredom, Prud and Orepak), ornithological and ichthyological reserve (Delta Neretva) and category of protected landscape (lake right and the blue eye). In the Neretva Delta has recorded 310 species of birds, of which 115 nesting birds, and in Metkovic is the second biggest ornithological collection in Europe.
