Description
African Violet (lat. Saintpaulia) is a family of 7 recognized species of herbaceous perennial flowers from the Gesneriaceae family, originating in Tanzania and Kenya in eastern tropical Africa, with a concentration of species in the mountains of Nguru, Tanzania.
The common name is the African Violet, because it reminds Violet (Viola, Violaceae family). It is usually African violet - a home-grown potion, but it can grow outdoors.
The name was given by Baron Walter von Saint Paul-Illaire (1860-1910), who discovered the plant in Tanganjiki (now Tanzania) in 1892 and sent a seed to his father, an amateur botanist in Germany.
